HyperMiler.net

Safely increase your MPG

What
What is a hypermiler, you ask? The official definition of a hypermiler (as per Wikipedia) is anyone who exceeds the EPA estimated gas mileage of their vehicle. The term originated with the hybrid crowd, but has since become a popular way to describe anybody who wishes to go farther on the same amount of gas.

Why
To motivate and educate, to bring more attention to this activity, and to create a lively community where like-minded individuals can communicate. Here you’ll be able to learn, share ideas, exchange tips & tricks and generally have good, clean fun (pun intended ;) ).

Motivation
While there are many noble reasons why one should become a hypermiler, such as lessening our dependence on foreign oil and polluting the air less, it takes a very wise human being to do it purely for these reasons; the truth of the matter is that I myself am not there yet (unfortunately), and I’m willing to bet most of you aren’t either. However, there are many other reasons to do it, which are both fun and practical. Here are just a few, to whet your appetite:

  • use less gas, save $$$
  • it’s a fun hobby: try to beat your personal best, compete with others — practice makes perfect!
  • reduce wear & tear on your vehicle, save $$$ in maintenance costs
  • make your commute safer, reduce the chance of getting into an accident (and lower the chance of it being fatal, in case you do get into one)

Does this sound good to you? If so, great — you’ve come to the right place! While some are obsessed with 0 to 60 MPH times, here we’re obsessed with MPG, a stat which you can track just like others do the 1/4 mile.

How
The first step is to educate yourself. We’ll start featuring a series of progressively more advanced articles which aim to make you a better driver. Our first priority is your safety, with a close second being maximizing your gas mileage.

How is HyperMiler.net different?
It starts with our mentality, which is very different: while others will do anything, including putting themselves and others in danger, to gain MPG, we’re here for the long run and our top priority is safety! We do not recommend, encourage, advertise, or sponsor anything that would put you in danger. This site is for people who want to educate themselves to become better, safer drivers and, as an added bonus, increase their gas mileage. We’re promising the best of both worlds — a tall order, that’s for sure, but if it weren’t challenging it would not be worth doing.

Who
I’m your host, Duke, and I’m a hypermiler. You can become one too! :)
